Echoless Valley
Published in Paperback by Dharma Communications (28 November, 1998)
Authors: Hakuyu Taizan Maezumi, Anton Tenkei Coppens, and John Daido Loori
Average review score:

roshi lives on
I studied with Maezumi Roshi from the late Sixties through the Seventies. Reading this book, I felt his presence. His language, inflections, and idiom shine through unhampered; this is a model of editorial sensitivity to the actual voice of a great teacher, and conveys his teaching beautifully.

An excellent addition to the Zen Cannon
This work is among those honorable books on Zen Buddhism which try to capture the "living" word of a Zen teacher. Though this is ultimately impossible, the attempt here is no less than inspiring, and if it were ever to be done, this would be very close.

This is one of the first books where the awkwardness of the language actually makes it better. One gets a sense of the teachers persona and personal voice. From a teaching point of view, it also reminds us how the unpolished quality of a thing can make it even more beautiful.

Lastly, perhaps this may seem trivial, its nice compact size makes it an excellent companion for any wandering traveller looking for pocketsize inspiration. Sometimes it is difficult to bring along the 400 page Heikiganroku on a long trip. This however, offers an endless wealth of wisdom which can fit in most any pocket.

Many thanks to the publisher, and to Amazon for allowing an obcure but important work like this to be offered. Maezumi's teaching resounds.

Elizabeth Meets Her Hero (Sweet Valley Kids, No 28)
Published in Paperback by Bantam Skylark (April, 1992)
Authors: Molly Mia Stewart, Ying-Hwa Hu, and Francine Pascal
Average review score:

This book is great for young children to practice speed read
I teach speed reading to kids and this book is just right for teaching speed reading to children. I have it in my box of books that I take to all my speed reading classes for children. There are three reasons for this:

1) The story is simple. It is easy to comprehend
2) The size of the letters is pretty big. Bigger letters help make it easier to learn speed reading. Most children's books don't have lettering this large.
3) People must start learning to speed read in material that is AT or BELOW thier reading level. This book qualifies for most children.

Oh yeah, the story line is interesting and it teaches a lesson of forgiving others when we get disappointed.

--George Stancliffe

I loved it!
I liked this book because it had an animal TV show in it. Elizabeth and Jessica got to meet the ost and his dog! I like to see the TV show if it was a real show bescause I LOVE animals just like Elizabeth does.

This book is the Greatest!
This Book is the greatest! It tells all About Elizabeth and Jessica Wakefield. In This Book, Amy Sutton And Elizabeth are playing in Amy's Backyard, in a tree. Elizabeth falls off and breaks her arm. She gets to stay home and do spaecial things and recieve special gifts. Jesica is jealous. What will Jessica do?

Elizabeth's Broken arm
I love this book, because it's so amazing. This is one of my favorite. Read this book. It gives us a lesson, even if someone got hurt, just don't be jealous because if you got hurt do you want someone to envy you? of course not so let us not be jealous because that's a sin.

Every Child Deserves Straight A's
Published in Paperback by Morris Publishing (06 July, 1999)
Authors: Susan Wood and Jim Wood
Average review score:

Every Child Deserves Straight A's (Up close and personal)
I am a Jewish believer in Messiah from Long Island NY. I have been priviledged to witness the tremendous success that comes from the faithful following of the principles of Jim and Susan Wood's book. I have seen this, up to now, unbelivable success at the ranch in Tennessee as well as with my own children ages twenty-one and six at home in New York. Every Child Deserves Straight A's deserves an A plus itself for sharing with it's readers the basic keys to a child's education in easy to understand, clear and loving language (and please note that according to the Wood's, education takes place all day and every day). This book brings to life the all important point that in order to be good parents and role models to our children, we as parents must first submit our will to God and follow biblical principles ourselves. It is the total dedication by Jim and Susan Wood to these biblical principles and to serving God by investing their lives in the lives of children, that I am privileged to witness through their writing and when visiting Wears Valley Ranch in Tennessee.

Moving stories of hurting children
I know Jim and Susan Wood personally and have seen the effects of the principles described in this book on the lives of the children they work with. The stories are true and it has affected my life profoundly to see how God's love can change a person's life so dramatically. This book can change the lives of the children in your life too.

Flying Concorde
Published in Hardcover by St. Martin's Press (February, 1982)
Author: Brian Calvert
Average review score:

Excellent introduction and thorough
I looked at a number of Concorde books, and this one and Orlebar's Concorde Story stood out.

This one is easy to read, very informative, talks about the technology without getting too detailed and talks about some of the politics and difficulty without getting caught up on it.

It's black and white and medium format, so the Orlebar makes a nice color complement to it.

Enjoy

Very enjoyable reading
This book talks about the design of the aircraft and flight operations first. Then it goes on to describe flight testing and the history of the aircraft.

It is a special plane and it is flown in a special way. It is a must have for those curious about the concorde.

The Folks in the Valley: A Pennsylvania Dutch ABC
Published in Hardcover by Harpercollins Juvenile Books (February, 1998)
Authors: Jim Aylesworth and Stefano Vitale
Average review score:

An understnading of the Dutch with use of the alphabet.
I used the book with my students and they really enjoyed it. They learned about the Pennsylvania Dutch and their life style along with the alphabet. A new word, "row", was introduced and lead to a wonderful dictionary lesson.

A pleasant alphabetical trip through farm country.
Better than the usual A-Z teaching tool in that it's a well-written piece of prose--how surprising. Lovely illustrations with an Amish theme. Will please adults as well as the young.

a great resource, even for locals...
As a regular visitor to the Napa Valley for the past 10 years, it's easy to think that one has 'seen it all.'

This book really reminded me what a special place the Napa Valley is, and how much there is to discover. Visitors and locals alike will find something new and interesting that they simply must try.

Take this book with you to the Valley, or read it before you go and find your new 'must try' discovery.

Fun in the wine country
This is a must have for anyone visiting or living in the Napa Valley. Well organized and cleverly composed. I found it most useful for locating the rare-to-find places and foods that make the Napa Valley so unique. It makes a great gift for all the food lovers in your life.

Georgianna: A Virginia Family Saga
Published in Hardcover by Brunswick Pub Co (15 October, 2001)
Author: Fay L. Logan
Average review score:

Georgianna
How could anyone not love this heartwarming novel. It takes you on journeys unimaginable, makes your mind race to figure out what will happen next. Lets you travel into the past where many things were previously left unexplained. Leaves you grateful that you have never suffered the losses this family did.

Georgiana is an inspiring story
This book, which sounds more like fact than fiction, is an inspiring story of the human spirit which can endure so much.
Georgiana is the tale of the life of a child (through senior adulthood)who has endured one hardship after another and manages to still find beauty and meaning in life.
I'd like to see this book be made into a movie!!!

Great River: The Rio Grande in North American History/2 Volumes in 1/Vol 1: Indians and Spain, Vol 2: Mexico and the United States
Published in Paperback by Wesleyan Univ Pr (October, 1991)
Author: Paul Horgan
Average review score:

Most complete introduction to the Rio Grande Valley
This two-volume series was my inroduction to Paul Horgan who became one of my favorite authors. It is interesting to note he and Frank Waters ('the Man who Killed the Deer') died recently just two weeks apart. They were both 92, and among the greatest authors who dealt with the Rio Grande. Mr. Hogan's dedication to detail set him apart from Willa Cather whose fame rests upon her book 'Death comes to the Archbishop,' using Lamy as her subject. She rejected the aproach of Paul Horgan who at the time was writing his own history, 'Lamy of Santa Fe.' Willa Cather was a novelist; Paul Horgan an historian, and of the two I prefer the truth. Anyone interested in the history of the Rio Grande will be delighted with Paul Horgan's two-volume introduction to it.

Horgan's masterpiece history of the Rio Grande river.
One of the major materpieces of American historical writing. The two volumes are a continuing delight, far better than any historical novel. Scene succeds scene, filled with movement, passion and unbelievable heroism. Won the Pulitzer and Bancroft Prizes for History, and is considered the greatest history of the Rio Grande from pre-Columbian time to mid 20th century.
